Reeds and Cane
Cane
- Will be moderately hard. I use a number of suppliers and my stock changes frequently.
- Gouge: I have two choices. I use either an Innoledy or an RDG machine, set to gouge at .47-.49mm on the sides, and at .57-.59mm in the center
- Shape: Mack-Pfeiffer reproduction (narrower) or Weber 1-C (wider).
Oboe Reeds
PROFESSIONAL REEDS
- I scrape these over a period of two to three days, in three to four separate drying stages. Reeds change considerably in their early stages, and if they have a couple of days to settle in, then the reed will actually be finished when it gets to you, and less (or no) "breaking-in" time is needed.
- For these reeds, you may choose your shape and/or gouge, if you prefer.
- Available in Soft, Medium-Soft, Medium, Medium-Hard, and Hard. For more detail on reed strengths, read my reed strength guide.
- Tied with black thread.
INTERMEDIATE REEDS
- Made with a slightly more economical silver staple, with natural cork.
- Made from first and best available cane currently in stock (if you want to choose a shape and/or gouge, check out my Professional reeds).
- Tied with purple thread.
STUDENT REEDS
- I use a brass staple with synthetic cork.
- Two drying stages.
- Made from first and best available cane currently in stock.
- If you are used to playing on "storebought" reeds, which are largely machine-made,
you will notice that my student reeds are harder than these reeds. This may take some time
for you to get used to. I feel that my reeds will encourage a proper amount of air and
embouchure support; after all, we do actually need to put air through the oboe.
- Tied with blue thread.
English Horn Reeds
- Cane is chosen from a number of sources, all moderately hard, and mostly French.
- Shape: RDG -1
- Staples: High-quality Brass, 27mm
- Scrape: English Horn reeds usually take a little longer to settle, but they last much longer than an oboe reed. Depending on the piece of cane, I take between 3 and 5 days to finish an English Horn reed.
- Wire: I may or may not add a wire to my English horn reeds. If you have a preference, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll do what I think is appropriate for each reed.
Return Policy
My reeds are absolutely guaranteed.
If you do not like them for any reason, or if they arrive damaged,

within one week of receipt and I'll resolve your problem.
I will either send new reeds, fix the ones I sent you, or issue a full refund - your choice.
