Reed Strength Guide

Here are some common characteristics of each strength reed that I sell. Of course, not all reeds will be alike, but these are main points that I aim for when making a particular strength reed.

Special note about storebought reeds:

In comparison to "storebought" mass-manufactured reeds, you may find that my reeds are harder. I feel that this encourages proper air support; though the oboe does not take a large quantity of air, proper air speed is definitely required.

Soft

• Usually made on a softer, grainier cane, or with a larger diameter cane. Very closed. Will respond with little embouchure support and air. Dynamic range will be extremely limited, and pitch will be stable. This strength is good for absolute beginners or for people who have taken some time off the instrument. Turnaround time for soft reeds can be longer than for normal reeds, because reeds sometimes get harder in-between scrapings and I have to take more cane off than normal.  This is definitely a reed for the new player, or for those who have extremely weak lungs and/or embouchure.

Medium-Soft

• Still made with a little softer cane than I’d use normally, and is more closed than normal. Will need to use a moderate amount of air and embouchure support. Dynamic range is slightly limited, but pitch is stable. Good for people who have been playing a year or two, or for adult beginners.

Medium

• Only slightly less resistant than what I would play. Same cane, moderate opening (about 1mm), but with a little more taken out of the back and with a really refined tip. These two characteristics give easier response. Pitch is also stable with this reed. You may find that the dynamic range is slightly limited. This might be a good reed for doublers whose main instrument is not oboe. If you are blowing this reed sharp, you should try a medium-hard with your next order.

Medium-Hard

• This is what I play. I aim for a full dynamic range and a reed that will take lots of air. The opening is moderate (again about 1mm). I like easy response, so this reed will have that. Pitch will be stable. I just look for an all-around good reed that is resilient, with a nice opening and response in all registers. Tone is somewhat dark.

Hard

• I only recommend hard reeds if you are planning on doing a little finishing yourself. I will use the same cane that I use with my reeds. The opening may be slightly larger than 1 mm. I’ll be able to play this reed, but not for long. It won’t be a blank or half-finished reed, it will just be more resistant with more cane left in all over than a reed I’d play a concert on. The response may be somewhat sluggish and tone may be a bit harsh for me.
